Thoughts from NASW Chapter Executive Directors Gwen Bouie-Haynes, PhD, LMSW is the Executive Director of the NASW Mississippi Chapter , and serves as the Connect to End COVID-19 Project Coordinator for Special Populations. MI-SBIRT are evidence-based models for supporting clients in making informed decisions about their health.
The Connect to End COVID-19 project was a multi-level, multi-pronged intervention, and I believe it demonstrated that preventing and ameliorating any such crisis in the future will require that type of intervention in order to successfully have the desired impact.
This scholarship opportunity will help cover the costs of the LMSW exam to be able to further my progress toward my end goals. My professional goals are to obtain my LMSW and LCSW while continuing to support marginalized communities. After graduation, I plan to receive my LMSW, and eventually my LCSW.
I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved through this grant, including training over 1,000 social workers from 27 NASW state chapters in how to use motivational interviewing (MI) and screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) to help clients make informed vaccine decisions.

After graduation I plan to take the test to get my LMSW and eventually work to get my LCSW. I would love to learn more about interventions that improve the mental wellness of oppressed youth. As I wrote in my application, balancing work with my education has been very challenging and this award will help ease some of this pressure.
