KVC’s historic first-ever creation of trauma-informed foster care was examined in a five-year study with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Child Trends and Dr. Glenn Saxe of New York University. For example, KVC helped right-sized congregate care of Kansas children in foster care from 30% in 1996 to just 4% in 2013.

These agencies investigate reports of abuse and neglect, and work closely with the court system to decide whether or not to remove a child from their home. While social workers do provide their professional perspective, ultimately a judge decides whether the child needs out-of-home care. The job is not a typical 8-hour workday
