The number of children entering foster care increased for the first time in over ten years. There was a drop in in-home case openings but a similar increase in foster care placements during the year. This included 19 social workers carrying 20 or more cases and five social workers carrying more than 30 cases.

A council criticised by inspectors for high caseloads has improved to a good Ofsted rating after hiring more social workers to reduce workloads. The council’s full-time equivalent of social workers rose from 345 to 368 between 2017 and 2020, during which time average caseloads fell from 19.5 Direct work praised.
