(notes for a talk at Confer, 21st Sep 2019 ) Abstract Describing psychotherapy as a method of treatment is expedient in healthcare settings, but it would take a tin ear to not baulk at it as a characterisation of the therapeutic experience. Then again, psychotherapy is also in the business of helping patients separate out from others.

Most people in the room were engaged with others, with the exception of one older woman who stood apart, her back against the wall with her arms crossed over her chest. Like Thompson, they filled the day with activities that provided structure and predictability, the two things I needed as much as medication and psychotherapy.
