Why We Need More Than “Checking In On Your Friends”

My Brains Not Broken

TW: This post discusses suicide and suicide-related topics. When I read about strings of death in the news about people who died by suicide, I am usually pretty shaken. It’s happened a number of times, and I usually always feel the same way, physically and mentally. I am sad yes, but my heart also breaks, and I feel hopeless, both for myself and for the world around me.

I've gotten over so much bad programming in my life, I would have thought I could have gotten over that toxic set of ideas as well, but it seems I just can't. Ideas of fatphobia just seem to own my brain. Skinny is good; fat is bad. Skinny is lovable; fat is unlovable. Skinny is beautiful; fat is ugly.

In fact, it’s likely that there’s so much more I don’t know about my own depression than what I’ve learned over the past decade. I write that to say when we talk about mental health, knowledge certainly is power.

When Not to Meditate

Beautiful Voyager

Photo by Pawel Czerwinski. People don’t talk about this as much, but it’s important to consider when not to meditate — or how to approach meditation— if you have an anxiety disorder or depression. Meditation can help you get through an episode of anxiety, depression or mania by betraying the thoughts that fuel such episodes as false, by giving you some calm space to survey your situation and predict your moods, and by revealing some ideas on how to intervene.
