The decline in the number of adoptions since 2015 is continuing while children are waiting longer on average to be placed despite an expanding pool of approved adopters, official figures show. The data was published this week as the Department for Education announced £144m in renewed funding for the adoption support fund (ASF) plus £19.5m for regional adoption agencies, from 2022-25, sparking renewed calls for investment in the rest of the care system.

Council social workers are receiving a 1.75% pay increase this month, back paid from April last year, after unions agreed a deal with employers. The rise constitutes a real-terms pay cut with the government’s preferred measure of inflation – the consumer prices index – having risen from 1.5% in April last year to 5.5% in January 2022 and further rises baked in.

Peers have overturned a government change to the cap on care costs that would reduce its benefit for less well-off people, and also voted to bring forward its implementation date from October to April 2023. The House of Lords yesterday backed a cross-party amendment to remove a clause from the Health and Care Bill that would only count client contributions to personal care costs – not the full bill – towards the £86,000 cap, for those receiving means-tested council support.
