The child was parroting the nonsense of the alienating parent to the other. This parent looked calmly at the child and said: Sweetheart, what is my reaction to you as you tell me such horrible things? Do I appear sad, upset or angry? No. My only concern is you. I am so sorry you have been caused to think and say such things. It must be hard on you given how nicely we actually get along.

Your child comes home… cranky. There can be so many reasons. The challenge is to not get caught up with their mood or behavior. Nor do you have to get to the bottom of it quickly. More to the point, providing a safe space, a capacity to just absorb their mood free of judgement or cure can ease your way to a better outcome. While 150 cases had been open for more than three years as of 30 June 2023, this had grown to 294 a year later, showed data published in a report to the regulator’s July 2024 board meeting.

The government has appointed Social Work England’s interim chair to the role on a substantive basis. Andrew McCulloch, who has overseen the regulator since Lord Patel’s resignation in February 2023 , has been made chair for the next three years. The Department for Education has also reappointed Adi Cooper and Sue Ross – both registered social workers – to the regulator’s board, also for a three-year term.

A former Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) president has been appointed chief social worker for adults. Sarah McClinton will succeed Lyn Romeo in January 2025 , a year after the longstanding chief left the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) position. McClinton, who was ADASS president from 2022-23, will work alongside Robert Lewis, who has been appointed mental health social work lead in the department, a role he has already started.
