Self-care, as a concept, was mentioned throughout my educational program; but what it actually meant and how to implement it remained a mystery. In my first few years as a social work practitioner, I learned many lessons the hard way.

Sometimes external forces can induce depression. They can induce panic. They can control how you see the world if you let them. I’ve got surgery coming up this week, so I’m getting my blogging in early. I want to work on my current novel when I start to come out of the anesthesia. We’ll see how that goes. Coping in Advance. If you know you are going to be watching the news and it may be triggering for you you can prepare in advance. I like to do this for all sorts of situations like when I am going somewhere new. Show up a few minutes early and get situated with your snack or beverage. Have an exit plan. Plan to turn off the TV, change the channel, leave the room, or step outside if you start to feel like things are getting intense.

A new beginning that looks an awful lot like the old one. When I set out to explore fractal art, I face a confusing array of controls & parameters. It has taken me years to develop the eye to select the best cropping, the most flattering palette, and the most interesting settings, then present them in a pleasing manner. Without this discipline, the fractal is an utter mess with no focus.

Unlike Ayn Rand who believed the world would end when she died, many of us—particularly those who devote our lives to social work—would like to live our lives knowing we are contributing something that will leave the world in a bit better shape that it was when we arrived. We are trying through our work at CRISP to influence as many social workers as possible to become more engaged in the political arena where our skills, knowledge, and values are in short supply.

Mami always told me, “when I’m no longer able to take care of myself, put me in a nursing home…my dignity is very important to me”. These words and personal preferences were shared, by my now 87 year-old Mother, close to twenty years ago. At the time, Mami was physically healthy, and her mind was clear and strong. Other than never driving or speaking English, she was self-sufficient and a great role model to all her six children.

Before 2002 I had been in and out of the hospital with depression; there was the idea floating about that I was exhibiting signs of bipolar, but I had yet to have a manic phase, so they could not diagnose me as such.
