A review of Teaching & Learning in Social Work for 2020

Teaching & Learning in Social Work

2020 was a strange year with many firsts for me – first global pandemic, first sabbatical, first live sessions in an online course, etc. Because of all these firsts, blogging took a bit of back seat to some of my other projects and goals for the year. I had four goals for the blog over the year, and some minor successes. They were: #1 – Publish 30 posts – only published 19. #2 – Enhance the reach of the blog – there were almost 45,500 visitors from 153 different cou

Spot Your Thought Patterns Through Radical Honesty Journaling

Beautiful Voyager

Photo by Kat Stokes. Many of us struggle with self-awareness and self-love. We’re capable of helping others, understanding their problems, and providing support, but when it comes to our own issues, we have a hard time doing the same. We’re unable to recognize or analyze our behavior objectively. The truth is many of us are forced into repetitive patterns we believe are an innate part of us.

What Happened to COVID Vaccines for Kids?

Shelter, Inc

Social media has many uses these days but being a reliable resource for facts isn’t one. It’s like the kids’ game telephone; one person whispers into someone’s ear an anecdote about a turtle crossing a stream to meet a butterfly. The story is whispered from person to person until it’s been changed so much a dinosaur is traveling the globe to butter a waffle.

Writing and Sharing My Story

Abuse Survivor

I have been doing a lot of writing even though this blog has not been getting regular updates. I have notebooks I write in but I’ve been free writing on twitter and letting it fly. It’s been liberating and I feel more free than ever. I don’t keep the abuser’s secrets anymore. It’s more clear than ever now what was abusive and harmful to me. My thought threads don’t seem to always fit a long blog post.

Photo of the author. 2020 was a doozy. Collectively, we’ve faced unprecedented levels of uncertainty, grief, loss and frustration. It was a year that called on us to dig deep from our well of inner resources. At the end of our poise and patience, we rolled up our tattered sweatshirt sleeves and set out desperately to find more resources. We found them in creature comforts.

Assessed to death

SECTIONED

Your periodic reminder that a mental health assessment is neither neutral nor is it help. Whilst carrying out an assessment may count as “contact” or “activity” for the purposes of a service’s records, it is not help. If you yank my sprained ankle back & forth to determine whether it is sprained, that hurts. A mental health assessment is not help for the person being assessed.

SECTIONED

The psychiatric system has beaten me. I’ve lost. I tried my best to get the help I need. How Nature Affected My Mental Health Journey

Forest bathing became even more important to me in 2020. “It’s been a hard year for everybody,” was how I initially answered people when they asked me how I was doing. It’s still true. It never made me feel better, it didn’t reassure people who were asking because they were concerned for me, and it didn’t help anyone asking because they
