Modifying My Approach to Therapy

My Brains Not Broken

I’ve been to…a decent number of therapists over the years, and though I’ve found short-term success with a few, I’ve never been able to find long-term success. Part of that is the transitions I’ve made in life (high school to college, and then college to post-grad can make that difficult), but part of it is also that I had no long-term goals with therapy.

Guest Post: Helping and Compassion Fatigue by Thomas R. Metzinger, LCSW, CCHt (USMC Veteran)

Bipolar Bandit

When handling trauma, therapists, counselors, health professionals, caregivers, and others that are helping, seek to understand the person, get a pulse on the crisis, engage in triaging the most devastating issues, and offer interventions that help to restore, or create in some cases, stability. None of these previously stated tasks are easy. In fact, the challenges that these helpers face, especially in working with trauma, can lead to an apathetic state of mind, body, and spirit.

When Not to Meditate

Beautiful Voyager

Photo by Pawel Czerwinski. People don’t talk about this as much, but it’s important to consider when not to meditate — or how to approach meditation— if you have an anxiety disorder or depression. Meditation can help you get through an episode of anxiety, depression or mania by betraying the thoughts that fuel such episodes as false, by giving you some calm space to survey your situation and predict your moods, and by revealing some ideas on how to intervene.

With Mental Illness, Pushing Your Limits Is a Mistake

Nnatasha Tracy

Our society encourages people to push their limits, and there is no out for people with mental illness. Our society claims over and over that we must "push the envelope," "take risks," and "do what scares us." There is no societal pressure to "respect your limits" or "live the way you feel comfortable." And maybe that's good for the general population, I can't say, but what I can say is that it's terrible advice for people with mental illness.

Romantic relationships can come with many highs and lows. You can oscillate between feeling very confident and then insecure. Insecurities can come from unresolved internal issues, such as low self-esteem, fear of abandonment, trauma, and general anxiety.
