Reform Mental Health Act and implement LPS: new ADASS president’s message to next government

The next government should take forward reform of the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) and implementation of the Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) in its first 100 days in office, the incoming Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) president has said. However, Melanie Williams said she was not expecting either major party to implement the cap on care costs and associated reforms to the adult social care charging system should they win the next election.

COVID-19 Inquiry: The Missing Mental Health Impact

Last week, a ruling was published rejecting calls from over 30 organisations to look at the impact the pandemic had on the mental health of children and adults as part of the Covid-19 Inquiry. The ruling, announced by Baroness Hallett, chair of the Inquiry, means that Module 3 of the Inquiry will look only at children’s inpatient care and not at other aspects of mental health in our communities during and post-pandemic.

Rita Hu Successfully Defends Dissertation

Rita Hu has successfully defended her dissertation, “The Role of Social Relationships in the Development and Consequences of Self-Perceptions of Aging across the Lifespan.” Her committee included Lydia Li (co-chair) and Ruth Dunkle. Hu has accepted a Provost's Postdoctoral Fellowship and will transition to a tenure-track assistant professor position in 2026 at the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice, University of Chicago.
