This month the Center is celebrating the incredible success of our annual experiential group event, Ironpaws. On November 2nd, the Center’s main campus came alive with the excitement of Ironpaws 2024, bringing together 21 children and 20 parents and caregivers for a day of courage and connection. Divided into three teams, our young participants engaged in the adventure course featuring low ropes elements, ground-level obstacles, tricky balancing exercises, and even a rope swing!
Nikole Hannah-Jones was the keynote speaker at the fourth annual Social Justice Changemaker Lecture presented by the School of Social Work at the Michigan Union in October 2024. Hannah-Jones is the Knight Chair of Race and Journalism at Howard University, where she founded the Center for Journalism & Democracy. Over the course of her career investigating racial inequality and injustice, she has earned numerous awards including a MacArthur Fellowship.
Birdie Thorn is an Author and Mental Health Advocate. She is a speaker with the National Alliance on Mental Illness. She has written articles for the International Bipolar Foundation. Birdie has lived experience with Bipolar 2, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and ADHD. Birdie runs an Instagram page @birdies.bipolar.brain that brings awareness to mental health conditions.

The government plans to strengthen recently introduced agency social work rules by putting them into law, in a move dubbed “reckless” by recruitment firm leaders.
