By Deb Solomon Recently councils and other employers of social workers in the UK have been encouraged to sign up to a new pledge to celebrate neurodiversity in the profession. But why? At the moment there is a patchy picture of acceptance for neurodivergent social workers, those with conditions – or neurotypes – such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
Staff well-being, just like with any other aspect of an organization, begins with effective, trauma-informed leadership. Without this type of approach, organizational leaders will not be able to provide supportive supervision, foster teamwork, or improve culture. And, if these key ingredients are not in place, it’s more difficult to care for clients, retain staff, and maintain profitability.
I’ve been placing less pressure on myself to accomplish a long list of tasks every day. Instead, I’ve dedicated more time to rest and meditation. This shift in focus has allowed me to care for myself more deeply, especially during moments when painful memories or flashbacks surface. I’m creating a gentler life that prioritizes my healing and well-being.
