I was close to my dad. His esophagus ruptured when he was 57. I rushed him to hospital. It was late evening. Mom was in the back seat of the car. He survived. It took it’s toll. He was in ICU three months, most of which was in an induced coma for the massive surgical wounds to mend. Then there was two months in a regular hospital room. To return home he needed three dressing changes daily.

Mom had chosen MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying). We had discussed this since before her cancer diagnosis. She had friends who had chosen this before her. She was no stranger to the concept. Even before turning 100, we discussed death and dying. How could we not given her advanced age. Indeed, I let her know that when the time comes and she might have had enough, I would take her out back and shoot her.
A dosette box is a pill container. It is divided by day and for some, additional dividers for morning, noon and night. It helps organize the taking and timing of pills. Mine is organized by the days of the week, morning and nighttime. For the last few weeks my dosette was like an hourglass. Each administration of my pills lay empty a line of sections as if counting down to my mother’s death.
In the scheme of things, my grief with the loss of my mother was uncomplicated. There was no unfinished business. There was no associated family strife. The settling of her estate is easy and straightforward. It still bites. I will get through it. My mood has been steady and the acute pain has subsided. My sleep is returning to my normal. Clearly not everyone’s experience.
I don’t consider 2024 to be a bad year. Despite the passing of my mother and my grief, she went on her own terms, peacefully and surrounded by family. For that I am grateful. My goal for 2024 is to honor her by taking her lessons forward into 2025. Sure, her motto was spread love, not hate. However, beyond that I got to see just how generous of spirit she could be.

Trigger warning. This post discusses nightmares. — It was a particularly rough night. It was Thursday past. I’ve had nightmares before. I might awaken and just turn over. These were different. Extreme. Arlene woke me from one. I was screaming in my sleep. I woke from another having punched the bedside table with both fists. It was like a zombie apocalypse.
Her passing was remarkable. The day prior she met one-on-one with the great-grandkids. It was a master-class on saying goodbye to young children. She told each how she loved them and then extolled their unique strengths and virtues leaving each child that special gift; knowing they are loved, worthy and of value. We too each had our turns. On the day of her passing our entire family was present, each supportive of ourselves and of our mother/grandmother.
When someone loses a loved one, I often message with, “May their memory bring peace when the pain of grief subsides.” The pain of my grief has subsided substantially. The peace I feel is contemplative. I think of my mother and our times together. They are pleasant memories for me. I recognize that not everyone was at peace with their loved one at the time of their passing.
