I remember a friend of mine who worked for a community agency telling me that parents would ask him to sign a form indicating their kid had done so… when they hadn’t done so. Other parents would do their kids work of finding them a placement to do their time… as if it was a jail sentence.

Be cautious about rushing to soothe every frustration your kid experiences. That thing called frustration tolerance cannot develop if each instance is compensated for or soothed by another. Indeed, all that soothing can rob the child of the capacity to develop resilience, the ability to overcome adversity. As they are left to manage their own feelings, then and only then can they come to self-soothe.

The thing is, not everyone can manage. Not everyone can maintain employment. Some truly don’t have the skills. Some meet hardship that overwhelms. Some face illness, accident or injury. Some simply lack capacity for self-sufficiency. What of these folks? We can leave them to themselves. Swim or drown. Few will want to drown. They may live a subsistence life, perhaps on the streets, perhaps scrounging, doing anything necessary to survive.
