Reducing problematic alcohol use is crucial to preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs)—neurodevelopmental disabilities and birth defects that can occur in a baby exposed to alcohol before birth. I was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1992 after I faced disciplinary action while a graduate counseling student because I had disabling symptoms of psychosis. I was no longer allowed to take graduate courses at this university. I also felt more guilt because I had hit the car of the lead teacher.
