For those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who have experienced abuse, trauma-informed care can prove very helpful. The impact and prevalence of trauma among persons with disabilities is hard to ignore. Other experiences that are unique to individuals with disabilities can be considered traumatic.

I have colleagues who were former foster youth, had parents that suffered from mental health barriers, or were victims of witnessing domestic violence between adults in the home. I do believe that there are social workers who see themselves in their clients and this is one of many factors as to why individuals stay in this field.
