Hard-pressed GPs will be able to refer patients to someone else and free up their consulting room at a time when we face a GP shortage. This is the work they are trained to do and have been doing for years, and I don’t think they have even been consulted for their views. I first came across social prescribing in 2015.

Schizophrenia? Who wanted a social media and marketing consultant who’d spent time in a mental hospital? I told him that unemployment payments felt like going on “welfare,” something I had been brought up to avoid at all costs. She is now retired but worked as a self-employed social media consultant and freelance writer.
