Are you disabling your kids? Unfortunately though, many patent do inadvertently disable their kids. These behaviors of the parent can disable the child from managing distress, being responsible and coping with life’s ups and downs. They do so by coddling, carrying, and compensating. Mild Intellectual Disability (MID) is a much-misunderstood diagnosis. It first appears in the 2013 edition of the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders, 5 th Edition (DSM-5). As for Intellectual Disability (ID), this is a replacement for the older diagnosis of Mental Retardation. Indeed, it is.

The parents were poor, disabled and unable to work. Sure they had disability support payments, but it barely covered basic needs. His parents although disabled, were still caring. Although a somewhat simple kid, he had memorized the schedule of which food bank you could visit on which days for what kind of items.

This outcome further disables the child come adulthood and also financially burdens society. The issue is coming to terms with a likely mental illness that is severe and disabling or alternatively, so much enabling with little accountability since early childhood that this person truly hasn’t learned to cope and manage independently. Here in Ontario there is ODSP – Ontario Disability Support Program.

I wonder about a “nonverbal learning disability.” I learn about their family, background, living arrangements, quality of life, conflict management, addictions, mental health, physical health, traumatic life experiences, etc. The child was almost five.
