What was so exciting about envisioning and placing this work into practice locally is that we weren’t talking about helping people theoretically.

Reliving Rage

It is a primitive, self-protective survival mechanism–an instantaneous reaction to counteract helplessness. Anger is an expression of self, but not primitive self-protection. It is a demonstration of self-protection–almost never a wish to harm the partner. Rage is the amygdala-driven fight response to threat.

The Difference Between Hurt and Harm

The difference between hurt and harm can be conceptualized as two points on the ends of a continuum–from the most innocent forgetting to a lethal beating. Harm is a different “animal” (double entendre intended!). Harm produces damage–sometimes permanent damage–and it is often intentional on the part of the injurer.

That meant I typically worked with people in distress be it from experiences endured, relationship woes and mental health. That left many parents angry for my involvement.
